If you’ve landed here, someone probably mentioned neurofeedback to you — a doctor, a friend, something you read online. And you’re wondering: what is it, exactly? Does it work? Is it right for me?
Let’s break it down simply, without the jargon.
The One-Sentence Version
Neurofeedback is a type of brain training that teaches your nervous system to regulate itself — usually to help with focus, anxiety, sleep, mood, or stress.
The Longer Explanation
Your brain produces electrical activity constantly — even when you’re asleep. This activity moves in patterns called brainwaves, and different frequencies are associated with different mental states. Slow waves are linked to sleep and deep relaxation. Medium waves show up in calm, focused states. Fast waves appear when you’re alert, anxious, or mentally active.
In many people dealing with ADHD, anxiety, depression, or sleep problems, these brainwave patterns are dysregulated — producing too much of certain frequencies in certain areas, or not enough of others. The brain gets “stuck” in unhelpful patterns.
Neurofeedback uses real-time monitoring of your brain activity to help the brain recognize and adjust those patterns. Here’s how:
What Actually Happens in a Session
You sit comfortably in a chair. A trained practitioner places small sensors on your scalp — they’re held on with a gentle paste and don’t pinch or hurt. The sensors read your brainwave activity through an EEG (electroencephalogram) in real time.
You watch a screen — often a movie, a game, or an animated display. When your brain produces the target brainwave patterns (whatever the protocol calls for), the display plays normally. When your brain drifts away from those patterns, the display dims or pauses briefly.
Your brain notices this. Over and over, it adjusts — subconsciously — to keep the feedback going. You’re not consciously doing anything. The learning happens automatically.
Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes. Most people find them relaxing, even pleasant.
What Conditions Does It Help?
Neurofeedback has been researched for decades across a range of conditions. The strongest evidence exists for:
- ADHD — improving focus, reducing impulsivity, and decreasing hyperactivity
- Anxiety — calming an overactivated nervous system and reducing worry patterns
- Depression — especially cases that haven’t responded fully to medication
- Sleep disorders — helping the brain shift more easily into sleep states
- Post-concussion symptoms — supporting brain recovery after head injury
- Stress and burnout — retraining a chronically activated stress response
Is It Safe?
Yes. Neurofeedback is non-invasive — nothing enters the body, and there’s no electricity sent into the brain. You’re only reading brainwaves, then using feedback to guide them. The most common “side effects” reported are temporary fatigue (the brain worked hard) or mild headache after the first few sessions, which typically resolve quickly.
It’s appropriate for children as young as 5, adults of all ages, and people who are already on medication (neurofeedback can be done alongside medication, and some patients reduce their medication over time as their brain regulation improves — always with their prescribing doctor’s guidance).
How Many Sessions Does It Take?
This varies by person and condition. Most people begin noticing changes within 10 sessions. Full results for ADHD and anxiety typically require 20 to 40 sessions. Some people with complex or long-standing issues may benefit from more. Your practitioner should be able to set realistic expectations based on your specific situation after an initial assessment.
